Salt Road Studio Launches Art Residency in Akō

Contemporary abstract artist and cultural entrepreneur Gina Keatley has announced the launch of Salt Road Studio, an international creative studio operating between New York City and Akō, Japan. Located inside a former kimono shop, the studio is transforming a building tied to Japan's history of craftsmanship, textiles, and independent commerce into a working space for contemporary artists, supporting artistic production, international exchange, publishing, and the newly established Seto Art Residency at Salt Road Studio.

A Fully Funded Residency in June 2027

The Seto Art Residency at Salt Road Studio will welcome three international artists to Akō for a fully funded, three-week program in June 2027. Selected artists will receive round-trip airfare, lodging, shared studio access, and a small grant covering food, local transportation, and personal expenses during their stay. The residency is open to artists working across painting, mixed media, photography, film, sound, collage, cyanotype, and other contemporary practices, designed to give participants the time, space, and international setting needed to develop ambitious new work.

Situated along the Seto Inland Sea in Hyōgo Prefecture, Akō is known for its historic salt industry, coastal landscape, traditional architecture, and longstanding culture of making. Salt Road Studio frames the city as part of an emerging creative geography in Japan, one that extends beyond the country's established art centers. While international attention has often concentrated on destinations such as Tokyo, Kyoto, Naoshima, and Teshima, Akō offers a different experience, one built around historic buildings, working neighborhoods, a coastal setting, and proximity to major cities that allows artists to engage closely with place while remaining connected to the wider region.

The transformation of the former kimono shop sits at the center of the studio's identity. Rather than separating contemporary art from the building's past, Salt Road Studio is designed to continue its relationship to material, craft, and making in a new form. That continuity extends into the residency's structure, which emphasizes cultural exchange as an active part of the creative process. Participating artists will be encouraged to engage with Akō's local traditions, food culture, architecture, landscape, and community while developing work shaped by their own practices and perspectives. Japanese-language ability is not required, and translation support will be available, with the residency open to artists internationally.
