SMS's 14R70-24 model addresses this by running two independent forming heads at opposite ends of the wire in synchronization, producing both sides of a frame in a single cycle. The company says this approach removes the risk of structural misalignment while also increasing throughput and reducing the floor space needed for production.
The shift also reflects a broader materials challenge in the industry: automakers' push toward lightweighting has driven wider use of high-carbon and alloy steel wire, which resists bending and tends to spring back toward its original shape after forming. Compensating for that "spring-back" effect in real time requires software-driven elasticity control rather than fixed mechanical tooling, a trend that mirrors how other Chinese industrial suppliers have moved to combine automation software with metal-forming hardware, as seen in China's rail bogie manufacturing sector.
